The International Thought of Arnold J. Toynbee: The World and the West from the ‘Long First World War’ to the Age of Environmentalism

The work expands on my doctoral research by revising existing chapters and adding new chapters on Toynbee’s late environmental thought. Toynbee (1889–1975) was an influential world historian and analyst of international affairs. The project reinterprets his international thought as a lens for understanding transformations in global order and internationalism in the twentieth century. It examines his arguments on nationalism, the decline of the liberal world order, interactions between Western and non-Western civilisations and his thoughts on the environment from the 1960s and 1970s. It also highlights the transnational resonance of his ideas, particularly through his interactions with intellectuals in the United States and Japan.

Ryoya Mizuno received my PhD in International History from the London School of Economics and Political Science in March 2026. Specializing in twentieth-century intellectual and transnational history, my doctoral thesis examines the international thought of the British world historian Arnold J. Toynbee and its global impact, with a particular focus on the United States and Japan. I am also a postdoctoral research fellow at the Research Centre “Normative Orders” at Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany, where I will be developing my thesis into a book manuscript.
