Former Fellow

Brian Christopher Rathbun

Professor of International Relations at the University of Southern California Dornsife

Research topic:
During his stay in October 2022, he will work on his project on the advantages of non-violent protests over violent protests. His work aims to explain how the former are better able to send elaborate signals of resolve while winning over audiences. Precisely because nonviolent protesters expose themselves to the possibility of suffering harm while being unable to protect themselves through physical violence, they can gain the moral high ground.

Events:
October 19, 2022, 12:15 p.m.
Paper presentation “The Other Cheek: A Costly Signaling Explanation of Nonviolent Success” within the ConTrust Research Colloquium
