General suspicion – social conflicts surrounding so-called clan crime
Lecture and discussion
With Mohammed Ali Chahrour (co-editor of the book “Generalverdacht”) and Dr. Robert Pelzer (TU Berlin)
In recent years, the social discourse surrounding so-called clan crime has intensified, particularly in major German cities. While police situation reports and high-profile cases in the media give the impression that there is a considerable threat, civil society and academia have criticized the concept as being too vague and associated with a high potential for discrimination. Those affected and residents of particularly policed districts complain of stigmatization and criminalization effects. We would like to discuss this with Mohammed Ali Chahrour, co-editor of the anthology “Generalverdacht – Wie mit dem Mythos Clankriminalität Politik gemacht wird” (Edition Nautilus), published in 2023, and with Dr. Robert Pelzer, head of the “Security – Risk – Criminology” department at the Center for Technology and Society at TU Berlin, who will present current results from the project “Biographies and Living Environments of Members of Large Family Structures” (BMBF KONTEST network).
The event is open to the public. Admission is free.
