#51 The Ukraine war and the new world disorder

51st Römerberg Talks

February 24, 2022 will be a rude awakening for Europe. Previous foreign policy norms and diplomatic rules have been shaken to their foundations by the Russian attack on the territorial integrity of a free country, which makes a mockery of international law, not least a traditionally anchored pacifism. Countless people, but also previous certainties, have been buried under Putin’s war machine.

The attack on Ukraine has shaken the notion of a global order based on cooperation. Overnight, the West finds itself confronted with geostrategic ambitions in which Russia has the backing of nuclear powers such as China and India.

Putin’s war is not only aimed at Ukraine, but also at the stability and internal peace of Western democracies. The open societies will have to prove that they are a match for the military and intellectual mobilization of their enemies. The hope of eternal peace in Europe that arose with the fall of the Berlin Wall seems to have been exposed as an illusion. What will we be able to rely on in the future? What should we do? What can we hope for?
