The Regulation of Disinformation: A Critical Appraisal

This article is an introduction to a special symposium issue documenting the proceedings of a workshop on the regulation of disinformation held at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main in September 2023. The contributions examine the justification and merits but also the challenges posed by anti-disinformation measures from different disciplinary and jurisdictional perspectives. The first three articles address empirical and conceptual fundamentals of the fight against disinformation. The next three articles look at the current regulation of disinformation in the EU, and the final article provides a US perspective on the issue.
