Encounters with foreign countries and people have had a lasting impact on European cultural, scientific and social history. Karl-Heinz Kohl (Professor Emeritus of Ethnology at the University of Frankfurt am Main, member of the Normative Orders Research Center) examines the traces left by indigenous peoples in cultural and political modernity in his new book “Nine Tribes. The Heritage of Indigenous Peoples and the Roots of Modernity”, he examines the traces that indigenous peoples have left behind in cultural and political modernity. Based on nine selected indigenous communities, he shows how they have challenged Western customs for over 200 years, inspired protest movements, inspired European art and shaped theories about mankind, and also tells how the indigenous cultures themselves have changed in this process. The book will be published by C. H. Beck on March 14, 2024.
