The long-suppressed and sometimes even legitimized colonial past is increasingly becoming an issue for European countries. Belgium, Italy and Germany are some of the countries that have recently apologized for their colonial history. So far, however, the debate on liability and guilt has mainly taken place within a national framework; a European exchange should also enable these discussions at EU level.
The Crisis Talks on November 14, 2023 entitled “Reappraisal of colonial violence – possibilities of postcolonial politics of remembrance” will focus on this project. In a panel discussion, academic Dr. Sabine Mannitz, Member of the European Parliament Salima Yenbou and sociocultural worker and consultant Laura Gaëlle Ganza will address colonial history and how Europe deals with it. Journalist Alexander Göbel will moderate the event. Before the panel discussion, the Hessian Minister for Federal and European Affairs, Lucia Puttrich, and the academic Stefan Kroll will address the guests with welcoming remarks, which will be followed by a keynote speech by Sabine Mannitz.
