Goethe University Frankfurt “Justitia Center for Advanced Studies”

Duration and Starting Date: 10 Months, starting on October 1st, 2026

The Research Network Justitia Center for Advanced Studies, funded by the Alfons and Gertrud Kassel-Stiftung and the Professorship of Political Theory and Philosophy, directed by Prof. Dr. Rainer Forst at Goethe University Frankfurt, is seeking to appoint up to two post-doctoral fellows in political theory/political philosophy for the academic year 2026/2027. The Fellows will be hosted by Frankfurt University at its Institute for Advanced Studies in Bad Homburg (near Frankfurt) and will be part of the Frankfurt academic community, especially of the Normative Orders Research Center.

Candidates should have completed a doctorate in political theory/political philosophy and should have proven potential to conduct and publish research at an international level. Candidates‘ research should fall within the Center’s areas of focus, especially questions of the current crisis of democracy.

Global Health Justice Postdoctoral Programme
Research Centre “Normative Orders” at Goethe University Frankfurt

Duration and Starting Date: 10 Months, starting on October 1st, 2026.

The Global Health Justice Postdoctoral Programme, funded by Höppsche Stiftung and directed by Prof. Dr. Rainer Forst and Prof. Dr. Darrel Moellendorf at Goethe University of Frankfurt, is seeking to appoint up to two post-doctoral fellows for the academic year 2026/2027. The Fellows will be part of the Frankfurt academic community, especially of the Normative Orders Research Network.

Candidates should have completed a doctorate in philosophy or the social sciences and should have proven potential to conduct and publish research at an international level. The Candidates’ research should fall within the program’s areas of focus, especially questions of health and justice, whether on a national or a global level – for example, access to medicine, gender disparities in health provision, sustainable development goals, climate change and health, the human right to health, etc.

Conditions of Award
We offer a grant of 2,400€/month. The grant is tax-free in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 3 no. 44 EStG (German Income Tax Act).

Additional benefits include a return trip (to a max. of 2,000€) from the fellows’ hometown to Frankfurt and a mission allowance of 2,000€. Health insurance and accommodation expenses are not included in the package, although assistance in purchasing a suitable German health insurance will be provided.
Fellows will be provided with office space at Normative Orders. They will be expected to take an active part in the Center’s activities and workshops, and to present their ongoing research to the members of the Center. Fellows are expected to reside in the Frankfurt area for the whole duration of their stay.

The Claus Wisser Fellowship Fund at Normative Orders, established by the late Claus Wisser and the Pro Universitate Foundation (in cooperation with the Friends of the University), directed by Prof. Dr. Rainer Forst and Prof. Dr. Nicole Deitelhoff, is seeking to appoint up to two post-doctoral fellows for the academic year 2026/2027. The general theme is The Future of Democracy. The Fellows will be part of the Frankfurt academic community, especially of the Normative Orders Research Network.

Candidates should have completed a doctorate in the humanities or the social sciences and should have proven potential to conduct and publish top research at an international level.

Conditions of Award

The research program Turning Points: Normative Orders in Transition? at Normative Orders, funded by the Commerzbank Foundation Fund, directed by Prof. Dr. Rainer Forst and Prof. Dr. Nicole Deitelhoff, is seeking to appoint up to two post-doctoral fellows for 2026/2027. The theme of this year is The Global Order in Transition, and we welcome applications from various disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. The Fellows will be part of the Frankfurt academic community, especially of the Normative Orders Research Network.

Candidates should have completed a doctorate in the humanities or the social sciences and should have proven potential to conduct and publish top research at an international level.

40 Jahre Schengen-Raum

Kolloqium

Der 1984 geschlossene Schengen-Vertrag schuf einen heute 29 Staaten umfassenden Raum ohne Binnengrenzen, doch Migration über die Außengrenzen führte zuletzt zur Wiedereinführung von Kontrollen, auch durch die Bundesregierung ab 8. Mai 2025. Das Walter Hallstein-Kolloquium diskutiert die rechtliche Zulässigkeit, wirtschaftliche Folgen insbesondere für Arbeitsmigration und Arbeitsmarkt sowie die Zukunft des Schengen-Raums.

Satanistische Politik und der Niedergang der Vernunft in liberalen Demokratien

Ein letztes Mal im Wintersemester 2025/26 lud das Forschungszentrum zur Ringvorlesung „Am Scheidepunkt. Zur Krise der Demokratie“. Zum Abschluss hat der Philosoph Michael Rosen von der Harvard University sein Konzept der „satanic politics“ als eine Variante der politischen Deutung der Welt vorgestellt.

Zur Aktualität des Gewaltbegriffs anhand von Camus und Derrida

Prof. Dr. Christine Abbt von der Universität St. Gallen hat im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung „Am Scheidepunkt? Zur Krise der Demokratie“ einen Vortrag über Demokratien und den Gewaltbegriff gehalten. Unter dem Titel „Demokratien verteidigen. Zur Aktualität des Gewaltbegriffs bei Camus und Derrida“ besprach die Philosophin Formen von Gewalt und Revolte und ordnete diese im Hinblick auf ein demokratisches Setting ein.

Christine Hentschel über Neuorientierungen in katastrophischen Zeiten

Im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung „Am Scheidepunkt? Zur Krise der Demokratie“ sprach die Soziologin über das Leben in und den Umgang mit katastrophischen Zeiten. Vor dem Hintergrund der Zerstörung der Lebensbedingungen, Kriegen, dauerhafter Krisenhaftigkeit sowie der Bedrohungen der Demokratie widmete sich Hentschel dem Einsickern des Katastrophischen in den gesellschaftlichen Alltag und einem sich verändernden aktivistischen und literarischen Umgang mit der Zukunft.

Wir trauern um Thomas M. Schmidt

Mit Thomas M. Schmidt, der am letzten Tag des Jahres 2025 verstorben ist, in dem wir erst wenige Monate zuvor seinen 65. Geburtstag mit einem Symposium begingen, verlieren wir einen der großen Religionsphilosophen unserer Zeit. Sein jäher Tod reißt eine Lücke in die Gemeinschaft der Forschenden, die wie er zu verstehen suchen, was die Rolle der Religion in den säkularen Gesellschaften unserer Zeit ist und sein kann. Zugleich wird er als der wunderbare Mensch fehlen, der er war.
