In view of the erosion of democratic structures, the political-philosophical debate has shifted from analyzing the best forms of democracy to more fundamental questions: What is so valuable about democracy anyway? How can we save it? And is it really worth saving? In her lecture “Is there a future for deliberative democracy? Democratic theory in the age of oligarchs, autocrats, and patriarchs”, Prof. Simone Chambers will address these questions. The public lecture will take place on June 3 at 6:15 pm in the Normative Orders Building on the Westend Campus.
Simone Chambers is Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine and currently a Fellow at Research Centre Normative Orders at Goethe University Frankfurt. She has written and published on topics such as deliberative democracy, constitutional politics, the public sphere, secularism, rhetoric, civic engagement, digital disinformation, and the work of Jürgen Habermas and John Rawls. Her most recent book, Contemporary Democratic Theory, was published by Polity Press in 2024.
