Morality and sanction
About the book
In moral philosophy literature, there are various views on what the authority of moral norms is based on. Some moral philosophers attribute moral oughtness to reason, benevolence or even the perception of moral facts; others, on the other hand, believe that moral oughtness is based on external sanctions such as social exclusion or internal sanctions such as feelings of guilt. The view that moral obligation is necessarily linked to sanctioning, which is frequently held both in the history of philosophy and in the current debate, is critically examined from various perspectives.
