Lecture & Film

In this series of events, academics, curators and artists approach the diverse ways in which film artists respond to the challenge of living in “double consciousness”, from Africa to Brazil and the Caribbean to (post-)colonial Europe. For more than ten years, the “Lecture & Film” series has focused on the work of an important director or a thematic field over the course of two semesters.

Current: Black Atlantic Cinema

“Seeing yourself through the eyes of … a nation that looks at you with contempt”: This is W.E.B. DuBois’ formula for the “double consciousness” in which marginal people live in societies characterized by oppression. Under the title “Black Atlantic Cinema”, the Lecture & Film series focuses on a cinematic practice that spans three continents and the history of several centuries and consistently leaves behind the framework of a nation-state view. In the series, academics, curators and artists approach the diverse ways in which film artists respond to the challenge of living in “double consciousness”, from Africa to Brazil and the Caribbean to (post)colonial Europe.

Curated by Didi Cheeka, Daniel Fairfax and Vinzenz Hediger with the support of Feven Haile

The series is organized by the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies at Goethe University and the DFF in cooperation with the research center ConTrust – Trust in Conflict and with the support of the Hessian Film and Media Academy, the Centre for Interdisciplinary African Studies at Goethe University and the Georg Foster Forum at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
