Digital Humor and the Cultural Politics of Public Trust in Nigeria – Lecture by James Tunde Yeku as part of the ConTrust Speaker Series

To what extent can humor mediate conflict and trust between the population and the state in the digital world? In his lecture at the start of the ConTrust Speaker Series in the winter semester 2023/24, Dr. James Tunde Yékú will examine how so-called “netizenships”, the most direct and condensed form of cultural and political commentary in social media, react to state institutions such as the police and their extrajudiciality and violence in Nigeria, thus bringing grievances into the public eye.

Dr. James James Yékú is Assistant Professor of African and African-American Studies at the University of Kansas, USA. He is currently a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Institute for African Literatures and Cultures at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
The lecture will take place on October 30 at 6:15 pm in the “Normative Orders” building on the Westend campus of Goethe University.
