Charles Larmore: Reason and subjectivity
Charles Larmore (W. Duncan MacMillan Family Professor in the Humanities, Professor of Philosophy)
I: Reason
II: Subjectivity
“Reason itself, however, must be something deeper than any set of principles, since it enables us to test their validity and, if necessary, to recognize them. Reason is our ability to orient ourselves according to reasons, and therefore lies so deep in our being that it is precisely this self-relation that makes us subjects in the first place. The aim of the two lectures is to present a theory of the inner connection between reason and subjectivity.”
