The diversity of normative orders
About the book
Normative orders are the fundamental rules of social coexistence. They are considered hardly changeable, but are subject to constant change, sometimes sudden, sometimes gradual, sometimes triggered by internal tensions and contradictions, sometimes by contact with orders that follow completely different laws. Using examples ranging from Ancient Egypt and the introduction of Christian norms into the ancient world to the understanding of copyright by singers in the Sahel region, historians and ethnologists examine constellations in which one normative order gives way to another.
