Expect the worst, prepare for the best: negotiating peace
Abstract:
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine marks a turning point. The longer the war lasts, the more it becomes a precedent and fuels further trouble spots. International rules are visibly losing their binding force and violence threatens to once again become a tried and tested political tool. Irrespective of this, the conflict is causing immense suffering for the people of Ukraine. This makes the question of how the conflict can be pacified all the more urgent. We use studies on the conditions for enabling and successful negotiations to assess what paths to a negotiated peace in Ukraine could look like.
