Under the title “The Building of Democracy”, the lecture series in the summer semester 2023 was dedicated to the history, present and future of St. Paul’s Church as a political symbol as part of the “Science and Society” endowed guest professorship of Deutsche Bank AG and the “Normative Orders” research center at Goethe University. In five lectures, various experts shed light on topics and questions that this place of democratic history poses to us and which were also taken up in the course of the broad debate on the future design of St. Paul’s Church on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the National Assembly.
The final event in the series will be a panel discussion in St. Paul’s Church on July 12, 2023. The discussion will focus on both the future of St. Paul’s Church and the lessons that the history of St. Paul’s Church holds for all those who see the democracy of the future as a “construction site” that needs to be worked on. Peter Cachola Schmal (Deutsches Architekturmuseum), Prof. Dr. Nicole Deitelhoff (Goethe University), Prof. Dr. Rainer Forst (Goethe University), Mike Josef (Lord Mayor of the City of Frankfurt) and Volker Kauder (former member of the German Bundestag) will discuss. The event will be moderated by Rebecca Caroline Schmidt, Managing Director of the Research Center “Normative Orders”.
