SAMBIZANGA spielt im Jahr 1961: Der Befreiungskampf kommt auch in Angola in Fahrt. Mit Bildern des Alltäglichen erzählt Sarah Maldoror die Suche Marias nach ihrem Ehemann Domingos: Er wurde inhaftiert, weil er sich der Revolution angeschlossen hat. Jennifer Blaylock vergleicht in ihrer Lecture Erstaufführungskopien auf 16mm mit der kürzlich erstellten digitalen Restaurierung des Films: „What happens to the revolutionary grainy aesthetics, the militancy of the imperfect image, the subversive qualities of the damaged 16mm print, when a film enters the artistic canon?“
