Die Erfolge rechtsextremer Parteien scheinen kein Ende zu nehmen – sowohl in Europa wie in Deutschland. Zunehmend verdrängen sie auch die christdemokratischen und gemäßigt-
konservativen (Volks-)Parteien. Antidemokratische, geschichtsrevisionistische, rassistische und antisemitische Vorstellungen werden mit einer Schamlosigkeit formuliert, die sich gegen Kritik immunisiert hat. Und der Tabubruch wird als populistische Heldentat gefeiert. Die extreme Rechte leugnet Fakten, inszeniert sich als Opfer und spielt mit ihrer Verfassungsfeindlichkeit. Wie konnte es soweit kommen?
Wer versagt hier: die Parteien, die Medien, die Gesellschaft? Worin bestehen wirksame Strategien gegen rechte Instrumentalisierung und Gewalt? Wer schützt die Gesellschaft noch vor dem Absturz in einen neuen Totalitarismus? Ist die Demokratie institutionell so gesichert, dass sie der Radikalisierung in Politik und Gesellschaft wirksam begegnen kann? Welche Möglichkeiten hat die Zivilgesellschaft, die Werte des Grundgesetzes zu verteidigen?
