About the New German Biography

The Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB) is the definitive historical-biographical encyclopedia, providing concise, scholarly articles on important personalities in the German-speaking world from the early Middle Ages to the present day. It includes deceased persons from all areas of public life such as science, art and culture, politics and religion, business, technology, sport and medicine. Like its predecessor, the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB), which was published in 56 volumes from 1873 to 1912, the NDB will be published by the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich from 1953 to 2024. The 28 volumes contain almost 26,000 articles on individuals and families.
