The authoritarian worldview as a threat to democracy. Authoritarianism and violence researchers discuss at the “Normative Orders” research center

Authoritarian and populist parties and movements are gaining influence in many countries. Increasingly networked with each other, their authoritarian world view is having an ever greater impact on the center of society, which can be seen in lateral thinking milieus and corona protests, among other things. What does this spread of authoritarian ideas mean for democracy? How do points of contact with a right-wing world view arise?

The discussion “Democracy in Danger – The Authoritarian Worldview of the New Right” on May 24, 2023, at 6.15 pm in the “Normative Orders” building, room EG.01, is dedicated to these questions.Dr. Carolin Amlinger (literary sociologist and research associate in the Department of Modern German Literature at the University of Basel) and Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Heitmeyer (social scientist and violence researcher, research professor at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence at Bielefeld University) will moderate the discussion, which will be moderated by Rebecca C. Schmidt, Managing Director of the Normative Orders Research Centre and the Germany-wide Research Institute for Social Cohesion.

The event is organized by the Research Centre “Normative Orders” at Goethe University in cooperation with the Sebastian Cobler Foundation for Civil Rights.
