SUMMARY:Times of crisis\, radical times? - New forms of radicalization
DESCRIPTION:Liberal societies in Europe have been under pressure for some time to deal with new forms of protest and radicalization. It seems that these tendencies are being reinforced by the current acute crises. The Crisis Talk explores the questions of how threatening these developments really are for society and democracy and what approaches are available to meet these challenges. The example of Islamism shows that although terrorist attacks in Europe are on the decline\, Islamist propaganda continues unabated\, is constantly changing and\, like many other extremisms\, defies established categories. These threats need to be highlighted in order to strengthen social cohesion in Europe. \n  \nProgram\nGreeting\nLucia Puttrich\nHessian Minister for Federal and European Affairs \nProf. Dr. Julian Junk\nPRIF Leibniz Institute Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research and Head of the “Extremism Resilience” Research Unit at the Hessian University of Applied Sciences for Public Management and Security \nImpulse\nProf. Dr. Andreas Zick\nDirector of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence (IKG)\, Bielefeld University \nPanel discussion\nProf. Dr. Andreas Zick \nDr. Christiane Höhn\nChief Advisor to the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator in the Council of the EU \nProf. Dr. Corinne Torrekens\nHead of the Research Group on Ethnic Relations\, Migration and Gender Equality (GERME) at the Free University of Brussels. SUMMARY:No peace for a long time yet - Peace Report 2023
DESCRIPTION:Book lɔ:ntʃ \nWith: Prof. Dr. Christopher Daase (Professor of International Organizations\, Member of the Research Center “Normative Orders” at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main\, PRIF) \ntranscript publisher 2023 \nIn the second year of the Russian war against Ukraine\, its global distortions are becoming increasingly apparent: The war is undermining the ability of international organizations to function and making urgently needed cooperation in policy areas such as climate protection and trade policy more difficult. Domestically\, polarization and conspiracy narratives are also on the rise – with negative consequences for democracy. But ending support for Ukraine\, stopping arms deliveries and appeasing the aggressor Russia would not bring peace. \nThe Peace Report is the joint report of the German peace research institutes (BICC / IFSH / INEF / PRIF) and has been published since 1987. In it\, researchers from various disciplines examine international conflicts from a strategic peace perspective and make clear recommendations for policymakers. \nPlease register at office@normativeorders.net. \nFurther information on the event series: Here… \nFurther information on the Peace Report and download of the publication: Here… \nOrganizer: Research Center “Normative Orders” at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and research initiative “ConTrust – Trust in Conflict”

SUMMARY:International Norm Disputes. The Link between Contestation and Norm Robustness
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch with Prof. Lisbeth Zimmermann\, Prof. Nicole Deitelhoff\, Dr. Max Lesch\, Antonio Arcudi and Anton Peez Moderator: Prof. Tobias Wille \nAbout the Book International norms\, institutions\, and the international order itself are increasingly under challenge in virtually every policy area – from human rights and global health\, through trade and climate change\, to arms control and international peace and security law. International relations scholars have begun to study the effects of norm contestation\, backlash against institutions and courts\, and the broader crisis of the liberal international order. Whether contestation weakens or even strengthens international norms has inspired a lively debate in international relations and international law. Does contestation always intrinsically weaken norms\, or is contestation itself a normative force that reinforces norms in their validity through continuous actualization? \nPublisher website: Click here… \nOrganizers Research Initiative “ConTrust: Trust in Conflict – Political Life under Conditions of Uncertainty” Research Centre Normative Orders

SUMMARY:Climate Activism of the Last Generation - On the Legality and Legitimacy of a Political Practice
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion \nThe last generation is the subject of controversial social debate. On the one hand\, the forms of protest and the group itself are exposed to criminal prosecution; on the other hand\, civil disobedience as a political practice is ascribed a significant role in the socio-ecological transformation of society. In any case\, the actions of the Last Generation raise very fundamental questions about the effectiveness and legitimacy of political protest\, which cannot be resolved solely in and with the dogmatics of criminal law. \nWith Prof. Dr. Thomas Fischer (former presiding judge at the Federal Court of Justice)\, Prof. Dr. Katrin Höffler (University of Leipzig)\, Dr. Daria Bayer (Goethe University Frankfurt am Main)\, Dr. Jens Marquardt (Technical University Darmstadt) Moderation: Prof. Dr. Doris Schweitzer (Goethe University Frankfurt am Main) \nThe discussion will also be transmitted via Zoom: Here… ID code: 891211 \nAlso part of the event series“Climate crisis and criminal law“.

SUMMARY:Criticism of ideology. Today!
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion \nWith: Alenka Zupančič\, Mladen Dolar\, Slavoj Žižek\,Rainer Forst\, Regina Kreide and Martin Saar \nModeration: Frank Ruda \nThe contemporary world seems to be in disarray: an impending (or rather\, already occurred) ecological crisis of unprecedented magnitude is juxtaposed with unprecedented forms of socio-economic and political inequality; new forms of technological domination and control coincide with a resurgence of populisms and authoritarianisms; signifiers once associated with emancipatory social movements and theories (e.g. freedom! or self-determination!) are now often used for a non-emancipatory and reactionary use.(e.g. freedom! or self-determination!) are now often used in a non-emancipatory and reactionary way. What is to be done in the current situation? Can “theory” provide orientation? And if so\, how?\nThe panel “Ideology Critique. Today!” will bring together key theorists from the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory and the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis – each of them presenting and speaking on their own behalf and not as representatives of a school – to critically discuss and review the possibilities\, limits and insights of the different approaches to ideology critique today\, in the face of a world in disarray. After a series of opening statements\, the panel will address\, among other things\, the current crisis and the contemporary paradoxes of authority and sovereignty. The panel “Ideology Critique. Today!” is part of the program of the Guest of Honour Slovenia at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2023. \nThe event will be held in English\, is open to the public and can be followed via livestream: Here…. SUMMARY:Ray's World Cinema: On the Genealogy of PATHER PANCHALI - Vinzenz Hediger (Frankfurt)
DESCRIPTION:Satyajit Ray’s first film not only made its director famous\, it was also the first film from India to be successful with audiences in India and which critics and cinephiles in Europe and the USA were able to classify in their own categories. Where does this dual resonance come from? Ray himself thinks about art in terms of pedigree and origin. A genealogy of his own art leads back to the complex modernity of Bengal. \nVinzenz Hediger is Professor of Film Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt \nFilm: PATHER PANCHALI (Song of the Road)\, India 1955\, 120 min.

SUMMARY:Nigerian Digital Humor and the Cultural Politics of Public Trust
DESCRIPTION:ConTrust Speaker Series \nLecture by James Tunde Yeku (HU Berlin) \nMy talk examines to what extent digital humour mediates encounters of public conflict and trust between internet subjects and the state in Nigeria. Specifically\, I reflect on how the country’s police apparatus functions as a mirror of the neurosis and antinomies of the Nigerian state itself\, demonstrating how citizens reproduce and respond to the banalities of police power through strategies of what I describe as cultural netizenship\, the most immediate and condensed mode of cultural and political commentary on social media. Using online humour that ‘polices’ and keeps a close guard on various official sites of corporeal violence in Nigeria\, I am interested in how Nigerian cultural netizens respond to the institution of the police and its notoriously extrajudiciality which\, itself\, produces the conditions for mistrust (James Tunde Yeku). \nSo via Zoom. Please register in advance: office@normativeorders.net \nA standard assumption of research is that trust and conflict stand in opposition and exclude one another. The ConTrust Speaker Series questions that assumption and inquires into the dynamics of trust and conflict in various contexts of social life. Can trust arise in\, manifest itself and be stabilized in conflicts rather than apart from them? What are the conditions for that?

SUMMARY:Coming to terms with colonial violence - possibilities of postcolonial politics of remembrance
DESCRIPTION:For a very long time\, European countries suppressed or even legitimized their own colonial history instead of dealing with its consequences in public. In the meantime\, however\, looted art\, monuments and street names are just as much the subject of public debate as whitewashing narratives of the colonial past. As a result\, truth commissions have been set up to come to terms with colonial violence. In 2021\, Germany officially apologized for its role in the murder of thousands of Herero and Nama\, Belgium asked for an apology for its role in the murder of Patrice Lumumba\, Italy for the colonial attacks on Libya – to name just a few examples. Possibilities for rehabilitation\, compensation and restitution are being discussed politically. So far\, however\, disputes about who should be liable for how long and for what share of history have mainly taken place within the framework of national politics. A European exchange should serve to discuss Europe’s historical responsibility for colonial violence and its ongoing consequences at EU level. \nProgram\nGreeting\nLucia Puttrich\nHessian Minister for Federal and European Affairs \nDr. Stefan Kroll\nPRIF – Leibniz Institute for Peace and Conflict Research \nImpulse\nDr. Sabine Mannitz\nPRIF – Leibniz Institute for Peace and Conflict Research / Research Centre “Transformations of Political Violence” (TraCe) \nPanel discussion\nDr. Sabine Mannitz\n\nSalima Yenbou\nMember of the European Parliament \nLaura Gaëlle Ganza\nSociocultural worker / Independent consultant \nModeration: Alexander Göbel\, freelance journalist \nThe event will be simultaneously interpreted (English/German). \nThe event takes place both analog and digitally. \nFollow the event on the YouTube channelchannel Hessen in Berlin and Europe. SUMMARY:#54 Hear the signals! The unstoppable rise of right-wing extremism
DESCRIPTION:54th Römerberg Talks \nThere seems to be no end to the success of far-right parties – both in Europe and in Germany. They are also increasingly displacing the Christian democratic and moderate conservative (popular) parties\n. Anti-democratic\, historical revisionist\, racist and anti-Semitic ideas are being formulated with a shamelessness that has immunized itself against criticism. And the breaking of taboos is celebrated as a populist heroic deed. The extreme right denies facts\, stages itself as a victim and plays on its hostility to the constitution. How did it come to this? \nWho is failing here: the parties\, the media\, society? What are effective strategies against right-wing instrumentalization and violence? Who is still protecting society from falling into a new totalitarianism? Is democracy institutionally secure enough to effectively counter radicalization in politics and society? What options does civil society have to defend the values of the Basic Law? \nModeration: Hadija Haruna-Oelker and Alf Mentzer \nThe event is open to the public. Admission is free. \n  \nProgram: \n10.00 a.m.\nWelcome\nIna Hartwig\nHead of the Department of Culture and Science of the City of Frankfurt am Main \n10.15 a.m.\nMaximilian Steinbeis\nHow anti-democrats could abolish democracy \n11.15 a.m.\nPatrick Bahners\nLines of continuity of German right-wing nationalism \n12.15 p.m.\nHanna Pfeifer & Andreas Zick\nHow could this happen – How more than the sayable shifted to the right \n1.00 p.m.\nLunch break \n2.00 p.m.\nNadia Zaboura & Max Czollek\nBetween panic and reconciliation theater. How to deal with the AfD (in the media)? \n3.00 p.m.\nMichel Friedman\nNever again is now – attitude without ifs and buts? \n16.00 hrs\nStephan Anpalagan\nStruggle and longing in the middle of society \n17.00 hrs\nEnd \nOrganizer:\nRömerberggespräche e.V. in cooperation with the “Normative Orders” research center at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and other partners
