In some places\, gender language is now seen as the dominant language of a well-educated milieu in which not everyone participates. However\, behind some protests lies something else: a destructive attitude that – while claiming the democratic right to freedom of expression and democratic protection rights – attacks the rule of law. On the other hand\, there are certainly triggers for a loss of trust in democratic institutions that provoke justified protest or even resistance. The Genetic Lottery \nDuring the early twentieth century\, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty and Einstein Relativity discredited the rigid Newtonian “laws” that had served as the foundation of Enlightenment thought for more than two hundred years. A host of great thinkers and artists have struggled with the larger implications of this shattering scientific redefinition of the very nature of reality. The paintings of Braque and Picasso were efforts to liberate us from Newtonian certainties; so too were the writings of James Joyce and Marcel Proust.   \nThese Lectures will focus on the response of French and German existentialists to the same question. I will be arguing that their ideas provide a crucial resource as we confront the challenges of constructing a meaningful life in a social world transformed by the high-tech revolution.\nMost obviously\, we are endlessly shifting from face-to-face encounters in the real world to internet encounters in virtual reality. But can the hours we spend on the internet make it even more difficult to construct a meaningful life for ourselves?   \nLooking to the future\, it will increasingly be possible to create babies through genetic engineering\, rather than depending on females to do this work. How should we go about creating the next generation?

What runs counter to one’s own convictions is branded as dangerous and should be banned from the public sphere\, from publishing programs\, museums or curricula\, some criticize. Others explain the recurring controversy as a process of developing a more just society.    \nBut who is right? And is it really a question of what we are still allowed to do? DESCRIPTION:ConTrust Speaker Series \nLecture by James Tunde Yeku (HU Berlin) \nMy talk examines to what extent digital humour mediates encounters of public conflict and trust between internet subjects and the state in Nigeria. Specifically\, I reflect on how the country’s police apparatus functions as a mirror of the neurosis and antinomies of the Nigerian state itself\, demonstrating how citizens reproduce and respond to the banalities of police power through strategies of what I describe as cultural netizenship\, the most immediate and condensed mode of cultural and political commentary on social media. Using online humour that ‘polices’ and keeps a close guard on various official sites of corporeal violence in Nigeria\, I am interested in how Nigerian cultural netizens respond to the institution of the police and its notoriously extrajudiciality which\, itself\, produces the conditions for mistrust (James Tunde Yeku).   \nSo via Zoom.
