SUMMARY:The discreet charm of the old Indies: Congo\, Brazil\, and colonial fantasy in a French baroque tapestry
DESCRIPTION:Kantorowicz Lecture  \nLecture by Cécile Fromont (Professor of History of Art and Architecture and Faculty Director of the Cooper Gallery of African and African American Art at Harvard University) \nA tropical menagerie set in a lush landscape surrounds almost imperceptible human characters and architectural structures in the eight tableaux of the Old Indies\, a Baroque tapestry from the French Royal Factory of the Gobelins. Interrogating the sources\, provenance\, and reception of the visual program that made their success from the 17th century to today\, this talk sheds light on the long-forgotten African sources of their iconography and analyzes the long-invisible colonial dimension embedded in their alluring exotic tableaux. It puts into dynamic dialogue the context of their creation in the ebbs and flows of the early modern Atlantic World with the contemporary debates about their display as historically and socially charged objects of European artistic patrimony. \nCécile Fromont is Professor of History of Art and Architecture and Faculty Director of the Cooper Gallery of African and African American Art at Harvard University. SUMMARY:The Black Altantic and the Politics of Self-Representation in the Cinema: A Critical Analysis of Mati Diop's Atlantics (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Lecture & Film “Black Atlantic Cinema” \nLecture: Femi Shaka (Port Harcourt) \nPaul Gilroy’s seminal work\, The Black Atlantic (1993)\, is cardinal to an understanding of the “ideas of the nation\, nationality\, national belonging\, and nationalism” as experienced by blacks in the diaspora. But as Zeleza (2005) noted\, “Gilroy’s central concern was to deconstruct the idea of the black race\, to divorce it from any African essence or presence\, to demonstrate its fluidity\, mutability and modernity\, and that black Atlantic cultural identities emerged in transnational and intercultural spaces of the diasporic experience itself.” This is where the work becomes problematic. DESCRIPTION:Crisis Talks \nEuropa tut sich schwer in einer Zeit\, in der die internationalen Beziehungen weniger durch Regeln geprägt sind als durch politische\, ökonomische und militärische Macht. Gleichzeitig ist die Forderung an die EU – aus Politik\, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft –\, sich des eigenen Potenzials zu vergewissern und selbst eine Macht zu sein bzw. zu werden. Aber kann Europa das und was für eine Macht sollte Europa sein? Im Rahmen dieses Crisis Talks geht es um die zentrale Frage\, wie europäischer Einfluss und europäische Verantwortung in einer multipolaren Welt gestaltet werden sollen. Die Herausforderungen sind groß. Die europäische Sicherheit muss eigenständig organisiert werden\, der globale Handel muss möglichst und weitgehend frei gestaltet sein\, globale Krisen müssen auch zukünftig mit einer starken europäischen Stimme\, aber mit neuen Partnern bzw. The lecture describes the experiences of surviving Jews and Sinti and Roma\, former forced laborers and homosexuals in the western part of Germany in the first post-war decades. The common image of the successful democratization of the Federal Republic of Germany is torn apart by these stories. The experiences of those formerly persecuted show that the hatred and resentment against them did not simply disappear; they were deeply rooted in people’s minds and in some cases still are today.\nProf. Dr. Dr. Michel Friedman is a lawyer and philosopher and an associate member of RISC. The films of Nicolás Guillé Landrián\nAfro-Cuban filmmaker and artist Nicolás Guillén Landrián’s final cinematic work in exile\, Inside Downtown\, co-directed with Jorge Egusquiza\, has barely been discussed in the growing critical literature on his oeuvre. This omission points to the persistent difficulties of making visible cinematographic works produced outside national production systems. DESCRIPTION:Lecture series: Racism in the police – empirical findings\, methodological approaches and controversies \nLeonie Fuchs (NaDiRa / DeZIM Institute) \nReports from people affected by racism about unprovoked police checks\, humiliation or problematic use of force by the police continue unabated. They occupy the public debate; numerous political initiatives have been fighting for clarification\, in some cases for decades. In recent years\, empirical social research and police research have also increasingly taken up the topic.\nRacism in the police has various dimensions – from individual attitudes to structural forms – and can be investigated in different ways. As part of the lecture series\, researchers will present current empirical studies on racist attitudes and knowledge structures\, institutional reproduction mechanisms of racism and the perspectives of those affected in three lectures.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture & Film “Black Atlantic Cinema” \nLecture: Usha Iyer (Stanford) \nhis program of two films from the Caribbean – a fiction feature and a documentary will extend the frame of the Black Atlantic by considering connected migrations across the Atlantic and Indian oceans\, and histories of African enslavement and Asian indenture. The many connections and frictions between African\, Indian\, Chinese\, Javanese and indigenous cultures of the Caribbean reveal the intimacies wrought by plantation capitalism between four continents – Africa\, Asia\, the Americas\, and Europe. \nIn the experimental documentary\, My Mother’s Place (1990)  fourth-generation Chinese-Trinidadian-Canadian video artist\, Richard Fung\, weaves a loving portrait of his mother\, Rita Fung\, whose grandparents came to the Caribbean from China as indentured laborers in the mid-19th century. Wan Pipel\, released a year after Suriname’s independence from the Netherlands\, features a rich tapestry of characters and locales that captures the Black and Brown Atlantic as well as the energies of a newly decolonized nation. \nUsha Iyer is associate professor of film and media studies at Stanford University and the author of Dancing Women. Schmidt (Goethe University\, Normative Orders) \nThe so-called “68ers” were not only a political counter-movement to authoritarian structures\, outdated norms and a post-war Germany that was perceived as encrusted\, but also a time of spiritual awakening. In newly formed communities such as “Commune I”\, many sought new forms of love\, coexistence and solidarity. Material possessions were questioned\, emotional openness and spiritual freedom were rediscovered. The movement was seen as an attempt to break free from the shadow of fascism and instead build a world based on equality\, individual freedom and self-determination.    \nThe panel discussion with Rainer Langhans\, Christa Ritter\, who has been part of Langhans’ self-awareness group since 1978\, and the social philosopher Martin Saar is dedicated to these utopian ideas that emanated from the 1968 movement and sheds light on their ideals\, impulses\, individual and socio-political after-effects. The focus is on the visionary ideas of a just\, free and democratic society that sought to dissolve patriarchal power relations. The changes in utopian thinking over the decades are also addressed: To what extent is the utopia of 1968 still relevant today? Which elements have become anchored in the collective memory – and which have failed or been forgotten? And what role do individual freedom and self-determination play today?\nIn a time of multiple crises\, the critical examination of earlier social concepts is gaining new relevance – also in order to better understand and think ahead about current emancipatory movements. To retrieve and reactivate them\, he produces an ambulatory mode of filmmaking that also doubles an epistemology for humanity’s very future. \nAbouakar Sanogo is an associate professor of cinema at Carleton University in Ottawa\, Canada. DESCRIPTION:Lecture & Film “Black Atlantic Cinema” \nLecture: Awa Konaté (Abu Dhabi / London) \nThis presentation explores the significance of curating Black Atlantic cinema as an essential curatorial praxis of memory work\, focusing on its capacity to confront double consciousness and offer alternatives for Black survival. Engaging with W.E.B. Du Bois’ notion of seeing oneself “through the eyes of a nation that looked back in contempt\,” the presentation propounds the ways in which curators vis-a-vis filmmakers in the Black Atlantic draw upon the political work of film to rethink today’s globalized world. Moving beyond the restrictive frameworks of the nation-state and national cinemas\, the concept of Black Atlantic Cinema provides a transnational lens through which African and diasporic filmmakers articulate histories of displacement\, resistance\, and world-making across three continents and several centuries. Med Hondo’s Soleil Ô (1970) dramatizes the alienation of African migrants in France\, capturing the psychic dissonance of double consciousness within a neocolonial European landscape. Similarly\, Martina Attille’s Dreaming Rivers (1988) poetically meditates on migration and diasporic memory\, constructing a cinematic language that resists the linearity of national belonging. By curating these films within a Black Atlantic Cinema framework\, this presentation argues for a transnational curatorial approach that foregrounds cinema as both a continental and diasporic medium-that not only reveals the fractures of double consciousness\, but also generates new modalities of Black being and survival beyond the borders of the nation-state. \nAwa Konaté is a curator\, art consultant\, and founder of the curatorial platform Culture Art Society (CAS). Her curatorial practice draws on archival research\, Black feminist pedagogies\, and memory work\, with a particular interest in interdisciplinarity and lens-based practices of African descendant artists\, and their resonance within global contemporary art.

DESCRIPTION:Keynote der Auftaktkonferenz des Forschungsverbunds „Herausforderungen der Demokratie in Zeiten ihrer Regression: Zeiten\, Räume und Diskurse“ \nIn Ihrem Vortrag untersucht Prof. Dr. Birgit Sauer (Universität Wien) die Wechselwirkungen von Geschlechterverhältnissen\, affektiver Politik und autoritären Strömungen. \nBirgit Sauer war bis zu ihrer Pensionierung 2022 Universitätsprofessorin am Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Universität Wien\, gilt als international profilierte Expertin für Geschlechter­forschung und Demokratietheorie. Nach akademischen Stationen in Berlin\, Freiburg\, Klagenfurt\, Mainz\, Seoul\, Boca Raton\, Seattle\, Stockholm und Berlin wurde sie u. a. mit dem Käthe-Leichter-Staatspreis (2015) sowie dem Wissenschaftspreis der Margaretha Lupac-Stiftung für Parlamentarismus und Demokratie (2017) ausgezeichnet. \nDer öffentliche Vortrag bildet zugleich die Keynote der Auftaktkonferenz des hessenweiten Forschungsverbunds „Herausforderungen der Demokratie in Zeiten ihrer Regression: Zeiten\, Räume und Diskurse“ (DemoReg)\, die im Rahmen des HMWK-Sofort-Programms 11+1 zur Stärkung der Demokratieforschung in Hessen am 31. DESCRIPTION:Vortrag und Diskussion \nDr. Regina Schidel (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main) \nMenschen mit »Behinderungen« sind in unserer Gesellschaft an den Rand gedrängt und werden oft nicht als vollwertige Personen anerkannt. Ihre Diskriminierung – Ableismus – unterläuft das Gleichheitsversprechen liberaler Demokratien. Obwohl diese Stigmatisierung strukturelle Ähnlichkeiten zu Rassismus\, Sexismus oder Antisemitismus aufweist\, erfährt sie gegenwärtig viel weniger Aufmerksamkeit. \nDer Vortrag analysiert Ableismus aus philosophischer und sozialtheoretischer Perspektive\, und zwar exemplarisch am Fall von Menschen mit kognitiven Einschränkungen/geistiger »Behinderung«. Es werden Ursprünge ableistischen Denkens in der philosophischen Tradition entwickelt\, in ihrer gesellschaftlichen Funktionalität untersucht und Möglichkeiten befragt\, diese zu überwinden – diese stammen etwa aus kritischer und feministischer Theoriebildung. \nDr. Regina Schidel ist Akademische Rätin a. Z. an der Professur für Politische Theorie und Philosophie an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. Sie wurde 2022 mit einer Arbeit zu „Relationalität der Menschenwürde. Zum gerechtigkeitstheoretischen Status von Menschen mit kognitiven Beeinträchtigungen“ (Campus 2023) promoviert. Ihre Dissertation wurde mit dem WISAG Preis der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt für die beste geistes- und sozialwissenschaftliche Arbeit im Themenfeld gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts ausgezeichnet. Im Dezember 2025 erscheint bei Suhrkamp ihr neues Buch „Behinderung und Gesellschaft. Ableismus in philosophischer und sozialtheoretischer“ Perspektive. Die Forschungsschwerpunkte von Regina Schidel liegen im Bereich der Moralphilosophie (Menschenwürde und relationale Ansätze)\, der Sozialphilosophie (feministische Erkenntnistheorie\, Fragen struktureller Unterdrückung\, ableistische Diskriminierung) und der Rechtsphilosophie (Menschenrechte). \nDie Veranstaltung ist öffentlich und der Eintritt ist frei.

Angesichts der veränderten Sicherheitslage in Europa seit dem russischen Angriff auf die Ukraine ist die Frage nach der „Kriegstüchtigkeit“ wieder aktuell – und mit ihr die Frage\, was Einzelne für den Staat leisten sollen.\nKann der Dienst am Gemeinwesen – sei es an der Waffe oder im sozialen Jahr – zur Pflicht werden\, und wären gegebenenfalls Frauen auch einbezogen?
