DESCRIPTION:ConTrust Research seminar “India as Method: Challenges and Perspectives in the Study of Media and Politics in Contemporary South Asia” \nWith Ruchir Joshi \nRuchir Joshi joined the film world in India in the early 1980s\, when he was in his early twenties\, first as an assistant director and then as an independent documentary and essay film-maker. In this talk Joshi will begin with mapping out the cinematic work-scape in India (specifically in Calcutta and Bombay) and putting it into the wider context of art-practice current at the time. The talk will go into the peculiar difficulties and challenges faced by film-makersaspiring to serious cinema\, while unpacking the effects of a flickering\, present-absent archive and archival practice on a milieu that was yet to form a stable relationship with distant and recent memory.   \nRuchir Joshi is a film-maker\, columnist and writer based in Calcutta. His films include Egaro Mile /Eleven Miles and Tales from Planet Kolkata. He is the author of a novel\, The Last Jet-Engine Laugh (Harper Collins UK and India). The aspiration is to move away from ideological readings of Indian cinema to push for a history and theorization of gendered performance.

SUMMARY:Trusting as a skillful act: a critical reconstruction of the sociological theory of trust
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by: Gil Eyal (Colombia University) \n“Trust” has become one of the keywords of our time. Politicians and the media bemoan the decline of trust in science and experts\, as well as in public institutions more generally. Global consultancies like McKinsey and Deloitte sell trust measurement and trust building as part of their portfolio. The scholarly field of trust research has exploded in size since 2000. The assumption seems to be that we know what trust is and how to study and measure it. In this talk\, building on Pierre Bourdieu’s analysis of the logic of practice\, I will argue that this assumption is wrong. There is no trust\, only trusting as practical\, skilled action\, highly dependent on context and attuned to temporal variables. “Trust itself” is a figment of the scholastic imagination and a currency used in its transactions with political and economic institutions. I will develop the argument through a critical reconstruction of the sociological theory of trust\, starting with the “commonsense fallacy” bedeviling trust surveys\, and then examining the “scholastic fallacy” that undermines the otherwise sophisticated theories of Luhmann\, Giddens and Mollering. While police situation reports and high-profile cases in the media give the impression that there is a considerable threat\, civil society and academia have criticized the concept as being too vague and associated with a high potential for discrimination. Those affected and residents of particularly policed districts complain of stigmatization and criminalization effects. SUMMARY:Police Accountability - Practices and Dilemmas of Independent Police Complaints Bodies and Police Control
DESCRIPTION:Conference of the Research Project “Police Accountability: Towards International Standards” / ConTrust Praxisforum \nIn times of expanding police powers as well as increasing discussions about legitimacy and problems within the police\, the question of police accountability and control becomes vital. \nHow is police accountability organized? How are police complaints bodies dealing with complaints? What are their objectives? What powers do they have and how independent are they? How well are they known to the public? How do they function in relation to other police accountability mechanisms? After three years of international\, comparative research we present our findings on independent police complaint bodies in an international conference and discuss these key questions together with experts\, practitioners and the public.       \nThis three-year project compared independent police complaints bodies (IPCBs) across five countries: Canada\, France\, Germany\, Japan and the UK. They make decisions that have a substantial impact on central aspects of social life: working conditions\, prices\, taxes\, the provision of socially necessary goods and resources and reproductive practices\, to name only but a few domains. As the unchecked power of corporations such as walmart\, google\, and amazon has become increasingly apparent\, academics and practitioners have begun to rethink practices of corporate governance for the twenty-first century.\nThis conference investigates potential solutions to the problem of unchecked corporate power in democratic societies. We seek to explore the following questions: what would it mean for corporate governance to become moredemocratic and in turn responsive to stakeholders rather than simply shareholders? What role ought the state play in facilitating the emergence of more democratic forms of economic management? How do different institutionalarrangements-such as collective bargaining between unions and management\, co-determination in the board room\, or even state socialization-empower stakeholder voice? How should the stakeholders of corporate bodies be identified and recognized in corporate governance structures? While we now possess a nuanced understanding of different possible approaches to the democratic\, stakeholding model of corporate governance\, the question of how different institutional arrangements might complement each other in realizing it remains understudied. We also lack studies that consider the social preconditions of this model: what kinds of worker and\, more broadly\, citizen education might be required for stakeholders to effectively exercise voice within a democratic firm structure? This conference addresses these questions by examining varieties of democratic corporate governance from normative and historical perspectives. We encourage submissions that investigate what constitutes a democratic or an undemocratic corporate governance structure.           We also invite contributions that analyze historical examples of and discourses about democratic corporate governance – such as the discourse of self-management in postwar france and yugoslavia as well as the practice of co-determination in postwar germany.

DESCRIPTION:International Conference \nPrecise measurement is a hallmark of empirical scientific practice. Going back to the intellectual tradition of the revealed preference paradigm\, empirical economic research is classically characterized by its strong emphasis of choice-based\, behavioral approaches and corresponding measurement protocols.  \nIn recent years\, the spectrum of measured characteristics (different sorts of preferences\, behavioral biases\, as well as beliefs) and features of implementation have rapidly increased. However\, the degree of standardization of actual measurement protocols is still in its infancy and systematic comparative evidence rather scarce\, e.g.\, regarding the validation of those measures in the field. SUMMARY:Michel Foucault - Another interim assessment of a reception
DESCRIPTION:Young talent workshop \nIn the 40 years since his death\, Michel Foucault has also become a canonical author in the humanities and social sciences in Germany. He is part of the standard repertoire in introductory courses\, and hardly any other author of the 20th century has had monographs\, anthologies and introductory works published so regularly. While the German-speaking academic reception was accompanied by conflicts from the very beginning\, Foucault’s canonization has once again become the subject of fierce public debate in the current socio-political debates: The question of what relevance his thinking has for understanding our present day must be renegotiated. In the tradition of the Frankfurt Foucault Conference 2001\, we want to take stock of Foucault’s reception “again” against this background.\nThe event is organized as a two-day workshop for young academics and is therefore primarily aimed at young researchers. The selected contributions address Foucault’s influence on our present in a variety of ways: For example\, some presentations dealt with Foucault’s significance for a wide range of disciplines\, while others were dedicated to newly discovered origins of his thought or innovative ways of connecting to his work. DESCRIPTION:Dan Diner (Professor Emeritus of Modern History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) in conversation with Miloš Vec (Professor of Legal and Constitutional History at the University of Vienna) \nToday\, the word “colonial” is used in so many different ways that it can be described as a veritable semantic inflation. Originally used for ‘overseas’ conditions of superiority and subordination\, it has expanded to include a myriad of relationships of domination – both internal and external. The attribute “colonial” thus loses its original analytical meaning and degenerates into an all-purpose buzzword. The epistemic arsenal of the “social” and “national”\, which originated in the 19th century and was essentially used to interpret hierarchically structured lifeworlds\, is displaced. In the process\, the core of real colonial constellations\, such as those associated with the “discoveries” of European expansion in the early modern period and the conquests emanating from Europe in the age of colonialism in the 19th century\, are lost. The event aims to address this extremely topical subject with the intention of enlightenment. The focus is on the history\, concept and political use of phenomena associated with the “colonial”. DESCRIPTION:In an informal lunch setting\, we aim to open a space for Grada Kilomba to talk about her experiences and insights into knowledge production within and without academia and the praxis of performing knowledge. \nPlease register in advance: Here… \nGrada Kilomba is a Berlin-based Portuguese artist\, whose work draws on memory\, trauma and post-colonialism. Using performance\, staged reading\, video\, photography\, large scale sculptural and sonic installations\, the artist interrogates concepts of knowledge\, violence and repetition. Kilomba’s work is best known for her subversive practice of storytelling\, in which she creates a poetic and immersive imagery\, giving body\, voice\, form and movement to her own writings. “What stories are told? How are they told? Where are they told? And told by whom?” are constant questions in Kilomba’s body of work. \nKilomba holds a distinguished Doctorate in Philosophy from the Freie Universität Berlin\, and in 2023 the artist was awarded a Doctorate Honoris Causa by University of ISPA\, Lisbon. She has been a guest professor at several international universities\, such as Humboldt University – Berlin; the University of Legon\, Accra; and the University of Applied Arts\, Vienna\, among others. Kilomba has resided at the prominent Maxim Gorki Theatre\, in Berlin\, for several years\, where she developed the acclaimed project ‘Kosmos2’\, an artistic and political intervention with refugee artists. She was the co-curator of the 35th Biennial of São Paulo\, Choreographies of the Impossible\, 2023. \nShe is the author of the acclaimed “Plantation Memories” (Unrast\, 2008) a compilation of episodes of everyday racism written in the form of short psychoanalytical stories. Her book has been translated into several languages worldwide. \nHer work has been presented in major international events such as: 10th Berlin Biennale\, Berlin; Documenta 14\, Kassel; 32nd Bienal de São Paulo\, São Paulo. DESCRIPTION:International Conference organized by the Goethe University Global Health Justice Postdoctoral Program \nThere are currently vast asymmetries both within and between countries when it comes to the matter of who experiences good health. Some people enjoy long lives largely characterized by the absence of illness and can access high-quality medical treatment when illness does arise. Others live for a much shorter time – struck down by preventable diseases\, or dying in childbirth\, for instance – and often also have severely limited or no access to health resources.   \nThe academic field of Global Health Justice – situated at the intersection of bioethics\, political philosophy and law – investigates the best way to conceptualize and evaluate many of the health disparities plaguing our world\, as well as the duties that this generates for states\, transnational corporations and other agents. This conference\, organized under the auspices of the Global Health Justice Postdoctoral Programme at Goethe University Frankfurt (generously funded by the Höppsche Stiftung)\, aims to create a platform to hear from\, and advance the work of a diverse group of global scholars who are working in various areas of this field.  \nA key focus of the conference will be attempting to bridge the gap between theory and practice. DESCRIPTION:Lecture \nNeepa Majumdar (University of Pittsburgh) \nUsing film excerpts\, ads for sound recording and projection equipment\, sound technicians’ columns\, as well as reports by and about salesmen-technicians\, such as the Americans Wilford Deming Jr. and C. Willman\, this talk will present debates about audio technologies and sonic cultures circulating in India during the period of cinema’s conversion to sound (1931 to 1935). Since many audio discussions at the time centered on the problem of noise in sound recording and projection\, the talk will approach the transition to sound through the lens of a spectrum of noise and meaning through which the audiovisual was understood. Analyzing ads for competing film sound technologies that made claims about swadeshi (or indigenously developed) recording equipment\, I will use the lens of “imaginary media\,” as theorized by media archaeologists\, to focus on “impossible” machines such as the locally developed tropically sensitive sound machines advertised in film magazines of the period.

SUMMARY:Targeted violence against social activists: data\, patterns\, and cases
DESCRIPTION:International workshop \nRecent years have seen an incipient debate about the targeted violence against social activists\, with a focus on the killing of human rights defenders\, environmental activists\, local community leaders\, and representatives of civil society organizations (CSOs) broadly speaking. Whereas violence against civilians in (civil) war contexts is an established field of study\, research on this type of violence – which is being observed mainly outside of conventional armed conflict settings (in countries such as Brazil\, Colombia\, Honduras or the Philippines) – is much less developed and rather fragmented. Existing country-specific studies hardly refer to each other. In recent years\, scholars\, in particular from the field of political geography/political ecology\, have started to use existing datasets (provided mainly by NGOs) for comparative analyses as well. Against this background\, this international workshop aims at taking stock of what we know – and don’t know – about the spatial patterns\, the temporal dynamics\, the causes as well as the consequences of the targeted killing of social activists. In order to do so\, it brings together knowledge on different regional and country contexts\, critically reviews the quality of the data that exists\, and identifies preliminary findings\, research gaps and avenues for future research. Overarching questions that will be dealt with during the workshop include:       \n\nWhat are the features and boundaries of the phenomenon at hand? What type of violence are we talking about? How do assassinations relate to other forms of violence against social activists\, and how does violence against social activists relate to violence against other types of actors?  \nWhat does our data (not) grasp and how reliably does it do so? SUMMARY:Persistent differences: attitudes towards migration and gender in East and West Germany
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr. Daniela Grunow (Professor of Sociology with a focus on “Quantitative Analyses of Social Change”\, Research Institute for Social Cohesion\, Normative Orders) and Dr. Mirko K. Braack (Post-Doc at the Frankfurt branch of the Research Institute for Social Cohesion\, Normative Orders) \nMore than 30 years after German reunification\, there are still major differences between East and West Germany. This is particularly noticeable in two areas: the division of labor within the family and the underlying gender ideals\, as well as in relation to attitudes towards migration. On the one hand\, people in eastern Germany are significantly more egalitarian than people in western Germany\, while on the other hand\, migration generates greater rejection in eastern Germany. This finding not only challenges society\, it also contradicts the assumptions of modernization theory. How can this difference be explained? Based on various theoretical approaches and empirical findings\, the lecture approaches this seemingly paradoxical situation and discusses its social preconditions and consequences.      \n \nDaniela Grunow is Professor of Sociology with a focus on “Quantitative Analyses of Social Change” at the Department of Social Sciences at Goethe University. Her research and teaching focus on the interactions of the labor market\, domestic work and gender relations in different welfare states as well as on aspects of social integration and cohesion. Daniela Grunow is spokesperson and PI of the research group FOR 5173: Reconfiguration and Internalization of Social Structure (RISS). She is also co-spokesperson and PI of the Frankfurt sub-institute of the Research Institute for Social Cohesion. In addition\, Daniela Grunow has led a number of German and international research projects\, including the ERC project “APPARENT -Transition to parenthood: International and national studies of norms and gender division of work at the life course transition to parenthood”\, as well as various ongoing and completed DFG and BMBF-funded projects.     \n \nMirko K. Braack has been a post-doc at the Frankfurt branch of the Research Institute for Social Cohesion since 2021. He studied political science and sociology in his Bachelor’s degree and sociology in his Master’s degree at the University of Rostock. In 2022\, Mirko Braack completed his dissertation project in sociology at the University of Rostock with his thesis “Exogamy and Participation in the Context of Migration. Quantitative studies on exogamous and same-sex partnerships in Germany and Europe’. Mirko Braack is interested in gender ideologies\, family sociology and the relationship between migrants and non-migrants\, as well as social boundaries and opportunities for participation.
