DESCRIPTION:Goethe Lectures Offenbach \nProf. Dr. Rainer Forst (Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy and Director of the Research Centre “Normative Orders” at Goethe University Frankfurt) \nIn current analyses of the crisis of democracy\, the concept of democratic or anti-democratic regression is used in connection with the rise of authoritarian populisms. In his lecture\, Rainer Forst discusses the normative preconditions that justify the use of this term\, understood as a diagnosis of the ‘rule of unreason’. This clarification makes it possible to avoid some errors in the discussion in this regard: the status quo ante fixation\, the reduction of the concept of democracy and the incorrect classification of the critique of democracy. These considerations lead to our own assessment of the causes of anti-democratic regression and the paradoxes of our time.    \nRainer Forst is Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy and Director of the “Normative Orders” Research Center at Goethe University Frankfurt. His research interests include questions of justice\, democracy and tolerance as well as the further development of critical theory and Kant’s philosophy. In 2012\, the German Research Foundation awarded him the Leibniz Prize as the most important political philosopher of his generation. He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the British Academy. Karl-Heinz Kohl uses the example of nine tribes to show how these and many other theories\, avant-garde currents\, emancipation and protest movements were shaped by a fascinated view of indigenous peoples. He explains how the indigenous peoples themselves made use of their fascination with the West and how closely intertwined the seemingly contradictory worlds are in the modern age. SUMMARY:Trusting the Blockchain\, Trusting the Novel
DESCRIPTION:ConTrust Speaker Series \nLecture by Adam Kelly (Associate Professor of English at University College Dublin) \nIn the famous 2008 paper announcing the invention of Bitcoin\, Satoshi Nakamoto justified the new currency on the basis of a need for Internet commerce to eliminate the problem of trust. “What is needed is an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof instead of trust\,” Nakamoto wrote\, “allowing any two willing parties to transact directly with each other without the need for a trusted third party.” The key innovation behind Bitcoin was the blockchain\, a distributed ledger technology that ensured that the record of all transactions using the currency would be ineradicable and shared. Ever since the inauguration of this technology\, its implications for the problem of trust – in but also well beyond the arena of online commerce – have been heavily debated. Some titles of recent books indicate how close the connection between blockchain and trust has become: The Blockchain and the New Architecture of Trust (2018); Building Decentralized Trust: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the Design of Blockchains and Distributed Ledgers (2021); Searching for Trust: Blockchain Technology in an Age of Disinformation (2022).     \nThis paper examines the implications of blockchain for\, and through\, a much older technology that retains an intimate link with the trust architecture of human life in modern societies: the literary novel. Responding to the virtual absence of literary studies from the otherwise rich interdisciplinary debates on trust over the past few decades\, the paper summarizes work in the discipline on the novel’s historical importance for embedding social trust in liberalism\, a modern political and economic regime that\, according to Niklas Luhmann\, “attempts to shift expectations from confidence to trust.” Connecting this shift in expectations to the debates around blockchain\, the final part of the paper will conduct a reading of Jennifer Egan’s The Candy House (2022). Egan’s novel offers a thought experiment about how the blockchain could impact human life\, and how the novel’s own architectures of trust might respond to that impact.    \nAdam Kelly is Associate Professor of English at University College Dublin\, having previously taught at the University of York and Harvard University. His second book\, New Sincerity: American Fiction in the Neoliberal Age\, is forthcoming in 2024 with Stanford University Press. From the very beginning\, constitutional practice has developed a wide range of concrete content from the openly formulated fundamental rights. The result is a constitution of freedom that is unique in Germany to date. In it\, freedom is not without its obligations. The Basic Law forms the foundation of a comprehensive legal equalization system. It draws its persuasive power from this. However\, the constitution itself inevitably leads to the limits of equalization and seems to risk its success there: If it is not possible to reconcile conflicts of freedom under constitutional law in harmony\, but must be achieved through a priority decision\, it leaves losers behind. Their integration is a challenge for the liberal constitutional state. If the constitution completely rejects the extreme use of communicative freedom from the outset\, it leaves the mode of balancing completely behind. It does so in order to protect unavailable goods and itself\, but in doing so it seems to give up a part of its identity. However\, the limits of equalization do not mean the end of the constitution. Its persuasive power may become less self-evident at the limits of balance. DESCRIPTION:2024 European Copyright Society Conference \nThe European Copyright Society (la Société européenne du droit d’auteur) was founded in January 2012 with the aim of creating a platform for critical and independent scholarly thinking on European Copyright Law and policy. Its members are scholars and academics from various countries of Europe\, seeking to articulate and promote their views of the overall public interest on all topics in the field of authors rights\, neighboring rights and related matters. The Society is neither funded nor instructed by any particular stakeholders. The 2024 ECS conference will address current conflicts over the scope and enforcement of European copyright law\, and look for ways to resolve these conflicts in a trustworthy manner and with a balanced outcome. The first session will focus on the role of copyright in the data economy\, in particular the impact of copyright on data access rights. In the second session\, Thomas Koch\, the presiding judge of the copyright senate of the Bundesgerichtshof\, will give a keynote speech on the cooperation between the Bundesgerichtshof and the CJEU in the application and interpretation of EU copyright law. DESCRIPTION:Public lecture \nThe event will present the results of the DFG research project KviAPol (Assault in Office by Police Officers) \, which ran from 2018 to 2023. Based on a quantitative survey of victims with over 3\,300 participants and over 60 qualitative interviews with experts from the police\, justice system and civil society\, the project investigated situations\, forms and consequences of police violence\, as well as how victims\, the police and the criminal justice system assess and deal with them. SUMMARY:Trusting as a skillful act: a critical reconstruction of the sociological theory of trust
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by: Gil Eyal (Colombia University) \n“Trust” has become one of the keywords of our time. Politicians and the media bemoan the decline of trust in science and experts\, as well as in public institutions more generally. Global consultancies like McKinsey and Deloitte sell trust measurement and trust building as part of their portfolio. The scholarly field of trust research has exploded in size since 2000. The assumption seems to be that we know what trust is and how to study and measure it. In this talk\, building on Pierre Bourdieu’s analysis of the logic of practice\, I will argue that this assumption is wrong. There is no trust\, only trusting as practical\, skilled action\, highly dependent on context and attuned to temporal variables. “Trust itself” is a figment of the scholastic imagination and a currency used in its transactions with political and economic institutions. I will develop the argument through a critical reconstruction of the sociological theory of trust\, starting with the “commonsense fallacy” bedeviling trust surveys\, and then examining the “scholastic fallacy” that undermines the otherwise sophisticated theories of Luhmann\, Giddens and Mollering. SUMMARY:Police Accountability - Practices and Dilemmas of Independent Police Complaints Bodies and Police Control
DESCRIPTION:Conference of the Research Project “Police Accountability: Towards International Standards” / ConTrust Praxisforum \nIn times of expanding police powers as well as increasing discussions about legitimacy and problems within the police\, the question of police accountability and control becomes vital. \nHow is police accountability organized? How are police complaints bodies dealing with complaints? What are their objectives? What powers do they have and how independent are they? How well are they known to the public? How do they function in relation to other police accountability mechanisms? After three years of international\, comparative research we present our findings on independent police complaint bodies in an international conference and discuss these key questions together with experts\, practitioners and the public.       \nThis three-year project compared independent police complaints bodies (IPCBs) across five countries: Canada\, France\, Germany\, Japan and the UK. Its findings are based on a comparative analysis drawing on over 200 interviews conducted with key stakeholders across the project countries\, public surveys conducted in four countries and extensive inter-disciplinary research reflecting the broad expertise of the project members across law\, criminology\, political science\, history and sociology.  \n  \nThe conference will be interactive with opportunities for discussion and will take place as ConTrust Praxisforum on the  19. & 20th of June 2024  in Frankfurt am Main. \nWe kindly ask you to register before 31st May 2024 via email to\nPolice.Accountability@hwr-berlin.de \nOrganizer: ConTrust – Trust in Conflict. They make decisions that have a substantial impact on central aspects of social life: working conditions\, prices\, taxes\, the provision of socially necessary goods and resources and reproductive practices\, to name only but a few domains. As the unchecked power of corporations such as walmart\, google\, and amazon has become increasingly apparent\, academics and practitioners have begun to rethink practices of corporate governance for the twenty-first century.\nThis conference investigates potential solutions to the problem of unchecked corporate power in democratic societies. We seek to explore the following questions: what would it mean for corporate governance to become moredemocratic and in turn responsive to stakeholders rather than simply shareholders? What role ought the state play in facilitating the emergence of more democratic forms of economic management? How do different institutionalarrangements-such as collective bargaining between unions and management\, co-determination in the board room\, or even state socialization-empower stakeholder voice? How should the stakeholders of corporate bodies be identified and recognized in corporate governance structures? While we now possess a nuanced understanding of different possible approaches to the democratic\, stakeholding model of corporate governance\, the question of how different institutional arrangements might complement each other in realizing it remains understudied. We also lack studies that consider the social preconditions of this model: what kinds of worker and\, more broadly\, citizen education might be required for stakeholders to effectively exercise voice within a democratic firm structure? This conference addresses these questions by examining varieties of democratic corporate governance from normative and historical perspectives. We encourage submissions that investigate what constitutes a democratic or an undemocratic corporate governance structure.           We also invite contributions that analyze historical examples of and discourses about democratic corporate governance – such as the discourse of self-management in postwar france and yugoslavia as well as the practice of co-determination in postwar germany.

DESCRIPTION:International Conference \nPrecise measurement is a hallmark of empirical scientific practice. Going back to the intellectual tradition of the revealed preference paradigm\, empirical economic research is classically characterized by its strong emphasis of choice-based\, behavioral approaches and corresponding measurement protocols.  \nIn recent years\, the spectrum of measured characteristics (different sorts of preferences\, behavioral biases\, as well as beliefs) and features of implementation have rapidly increased. However\, the degree of standardization of actual measurement protocols is still in its infancy and systematic comparative evidence rather scarce\, e.g.\, regarding the validation of those measures in the field. SUMMARY:Michel Foucault - Another interim assessment of a reception
DESCRIPTION:Young talent workshop \nIn the 40 years since his death\, Michel Foucault has also become a canonical author in the humanities and social sciences in Germany. He is part of the standard repertoire in introductory courses\, and hardly any other author of the 20th century has had monographs\, anthologies and introductory works published so regularly. While the German-speaking academic reception was accompanied by conflicts from the very beginning\, Foucault’s canonization has once again become the subject of fierce public debate in the current socio-political debates: The question of what relevance his thinking has for understanding our present day must be renegotiated. In the tradition of the Frankfurt Foucault Conference 2001\, we want to take stock of Foucault’s reception “again” against this background.\nThe event is organized as a two-day workshop for young academics and is therefore primarily aimed at young researchers. The selected contributions address Foucault’s influence on our present in a variety of ways: For example\, some presentations dealt with Foucault’s significance for a wide range of disciplines\, while others were dedicated to newly discovered origins of his thought or innovative ways of connecting to his work. Finally\, a last block of contributions addresses the direct significance of Foucault for the understanding of current political conflicts.\nThe lectures will be presented in 4 panels with up to 4 lectures each; a total of 45 minutes is planned for each lecture including discussion. There will also be keynote lectures by Frieder Vogelmann\, Vincent August and Judith Revel.        \nThe entire event will take place in the Haus Normative Ordnungen on Campus Westend (room EG.01/02).
