SUMMARY:Eternal anti-Semitism and the protection of Jewish life in Europe - What to do?
DESCRIPTION:Crisis Talks \nThe brutal Hamas attack on Israeli citizens on October 7\, 2023 and Israel’s response in Gaza also had direct consequences for Jews in Europe. Attacks on Jewish institutions and threats against Jews in Europe reinforce insecurities and an already existing structural anti-Semitism. Once again\, the question arises as to what needs to be done to sustainably protect Jewish life in Europe and combat anti-Semitism. The experts at this Crisis Talk will discuss the challenges\, but above all they want to present concrete solutions. \nCrisis Talks of the Leibniz Research Alliance “Crises in a Globalized World”\nCrises have historically been an important driver of change and progress in the EU. In crisis situations\, the EU\, which is characterized by great heterogeneity and geared towards consensual opinion-forming\, has so far mostly been able to create common perceptions\, overcome blockades and shape integration. In the Crisis Talks series\, the Leibniz Research Alliance “Crises in a Globalized World” explores the question of how Europe should deal with its current and past crises. \nPlease register via this link…\nThe event will be simultaneously interpreted (English/German). \nProgram \nGreeting\nClaus-Peter Appel\nDeputy Head of the State Representation of Hesse to the EU\nRebecca C. SUMMARY:Democracy and the Public Sphere
DESCRIPTION:XXIIIrd Walter Hallstein Symposium \nSigns of democratic decay can currently be observed in various member states. The Walter Hallstein Colloquium 2024 is dedicated to European democracy and the public sphere in light of this year’s elections to the European Parliament. The topic is multi-layered and not limited to jurisprudence. The colloquium will therefore take an interdisciplinary approach with speakers from various member states and different professions. Firstly\, a representative of the European Parliament will give an overview of the symposium topic from the perspective of European politics. The scientific part will then begin with a sociological lecture on the various models of society in the early days of European integration. This will be followed by presentations on the Council’s concept of democracy\, the sustainability of European democracy and the rule of law\, the tension between the preservation of European constitutional values and the legal traditions of the Member States\, “democratic backsliding” in Poland and Hungary and the role of European citizenship in times of multiple crises. \nRegistration until March 18\, 2024. by e-mail: psaila@jur.uni-frankfurt.de \n  \nProgram \nThursday\, March 21 \n14.15\nWelcome\nStefan Kadelbach\, Wilhelm Merton Center \n14.30\nKeynote\nSven Simon\, Member of the European Parliament (Philipps-University Marburg) \n15.00\nDiscussion \n15.20\nCoffee break \n16.10\nWhat could have been meant by a European “Community”\, and what are the consequences for a European political normative order?\nNiall Bond\, University Lyon Lumière II \n16.35\nDiscussion \n16.55\nGovernment as Key Concept to Understanding EU Democracy\nGiacomo Rugge\, Council of the European Union \n17.20\nDiscussion \n17.40\nSustainability of Democracy and the Rule of Law in Europe: Challenges and Guarantees\nLina Papadopoulou\, University of Thessaloniki \n17.55\nDiscussion \nFriday\, March 22 \n09.15\nEuropean Rule of Law Standards in Lithuania\nSkirgailė Žalimienė\, President of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania University of Vilnius \n09.40\nDiscussion \n10:00\nCoffee break \n10.15\nCentral European Identity Claims\, Democratic Backsliding and the EU\nKriszta Kovács\, Berlin Science Center \n10.40\nDiscussion \n11.00\nDevelopments in Poland and their Consequences for the European Union\nIrena Lipowicz\, Wyszinski-University of Warsaw \n11.25\nDiscussion \n11.45\nEuropean Citizenship in Times of Crisis – Effects on the Implantation of Social Rights\nEmilio Castorina\, Universitá degli Studi Catania \n12.15\nDiscussion \n12.45\nConcluding Remarks\nRainer Hofmann\, Wilhelm Merton Center \n13.00\nEnd of Symposium \nPresented by:\nWilhelm Merton-Centre for European Integration and International Economic Order in cooperation with the Research Centre Normative Orders of Goethe University and Nomos

SUMMARY:"The Wanderer's Melody": A new look at APUR SANSAR (1959) - Moinak Biswas (Kolkata)
DESCRIPTION:APUR SANSAR (1959)\, the third film in the Apu trilogy\, paints a picture of domestic happiness in the midst of economic hardship. At the same time\, the richness of nature from the first two films is transformed here into a feeling of wasteland. This double tension can also be understood against the backdrop of the emergence of a new form of melodrama in the 1950s. \nMoinak Biswas is a professor of film studies at Jadavpur University in Kolkata and a filmmaker. He also makes films. \nFilm: APUR SANSAR (Apu’s way to life)\, India 1959\, 101 min.

SUMMARY:Persistence of the Community: On a Tendency in Indian Cinema
DESCRIPTION:ConTrust Research seminar “India as Method: Challenges and Perspectives in the Study of Media and Politics in Contemporary South Asia” \nWith Moinak Biswas \nIt was commonly believed that with the development of modern forms\, Indian cinema will present a fuller notion of the individual. We have had reasons to question that equation between modernity and individualization. This talk will address the recent phenomenon of Indian regional films where serious content is treated in relation to locality and collective life\, and trace the tendency back to the work of early masters of Indian art cinema. It would like to explore the nature of contemplation where individual-centric plots are missing. \nMoinak Biswas is Professor of Film Studies at Jadavpur University\, Kolkata. He also makes films. \n  \nPresented by:\nGraduate Research Training Group “Configurations of Film”\, Institute for Theatre\, Film and Media Studies (TFM) at Goethe University and Research Initiative “ConTrust: Trust in Conflict – Political Life under Conditions of Uncertainty” at the Research Centre Normative Orders

SUMMARY:Group Identity beyond Nationalism. Lessons from National Socialism
DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture \nProf. Dr. Jonathan Wolff (Alfred Landecker Professor of Values and Public Policy and Governing Body Fellow at Wolfson College\, University of Oxford) \nNationalism has been described as an affront to civilized values but now we see it on the rise\, once more\, around the globe. Drawing on an account of my father’s early life in Frankfurt\, and the effect of National Socialism on his family\, I will consider the degree to which it is possible to replace\, or at least supplement\, the appeal of national identity with forms of belonging that draw on other sources of identity. \nProf. Dr. Jonathan Wolff\, Fellow of the British Academy\, is the Alfred Landecker Professor of Values and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government\, University of Oxford\, Fellow of Wolfson College\, Oxford\, and President of The Royal Institute of Philosophy\, London. SUMMARY:Ray beyond realism: On the irrational and non-human in MONIHARA and DEVI - Meheli Sen (New Brunswick)
DESCRIPTION:Satyajit Ray occupies a central position in research on Indian cinema. His films are usually read in terms of humanism and realism. DEVI and MONIHARA (The Lost Jewels)\, the centerpiece of the episodic film The Three Daughters and Ray’s only horror film\, offer an opportunity to reflect on the uncanny and the non-human in his work. \nMeheli Sen is Associate Professor in the Department of African\, Middle Eastern\, and South Asian Languages and Literature and in the Cinema Studies program at Rutgers University. \nFilm: MONIHARA (The Lost Jewels)\, as part of Three Daughters India 1961\, 158 min

SUMMARY:Realisms\, Melodrama\, and beyond in the Study of Indian Cinema
DESCRIPTION:ConTrust Research seminar “India as Method: Challenges and Perspectives in the Study of Media and Politics in Contemporary South Asia” \nWith Meheli Sen \nFrom its very inception\, questions of realism and melodrama-broadly understood-have informed studies of Indian cinema. With a few exceptions\, critics and scholars have seen these aesthetic and analytical frameworks as hermetically sealed off-aligned to India’s Art and Popular cinemas respectively. In this seminar we will focus on the porosities and promiscuities between these categories in an exploration both epistemological and historical. An array of so-called “Art” and “Popular” films will be used as examples\, including the works of Satyajit Ray\, Ritwik Ghatak\, Ajay Kar\, Tapan Sinha\, Manmohan Desai\, and Karan Johar. \nMeheli Sen is Associate Professor in the department of African\, Middle Eastern\, and South Asian Languages and Literatures\, and the Cinema Studies program at Rutgers University. She has co-edited Figurations in Indian Film (Palgrave-Macmillan\, 2013)\, and her book\, Haunting Bollywood: Gender\, Genre and the Supernatural in Hindi Commercial Cinema was published in 2017 by The University of Texas Press. \nPresented by:\nGraduate Research Training Group “Configurations of Film”\, Institute for Theatre\, Film and Media Studies (TFM) at Goethe University and Research Initiative “ConTrust: Trust in Conflict – Political Life under Conditions of Uncertainty” at the Research Centre Normative Orders

SUMMARY:Horror and the Political in Contemporary South Asia
DESCRIPTION:Meheli Sen (Rutgers University\, New Jersey) \nThis talk looks at genre cinema particularly the horror film-to situate it within India’s contemporary media cultures. In the face of totalitarian discourses that detine the nation-state\, Meheli Sen suggests that regional-language horror offers a salubrious environment to register difference and dissent in potent and unexpected ways.

SUMMARY:Democracy in times of regression. Normative and time-diagnostic considerations
DESCRIPTION:Goethe Lectures Offenbach \nProf. Dr. Rainer Forst (Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy and Director of the Research Centre “Normative Orders” at Goethe University Frankfurt) \nIn current analyses of the crisis of democracy\, the concept of democratic or anti-democratic regression is used in connection with the rise of authoritarian populisms. In his lecture\, Rainer Forst discusses the normative preconditions that justify the use of this term\, understood as a diagnosis of the ‘rule of unreason’. This clarification makes it possible to avoid some errors in the discussion in this regard: the status quo ante fixation\, the reduction of the concept of democracy and the incorrect classification of the critique of democracy. These considerations lead to our own assessment of the causes of anti-democratic regression and the paradoxes of our time. \nRainer Forst is Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy and Director of the “Normative Orders” Research Center at Goethe University Frankfurt. His research interests include questions of justice\, democracy and tolerance as well as the further development of critical theory and Kant’s philosophy. In 2012\, the German Research Foundation awarded him the Leibniz Prize as the most important political philosopher of his generation. He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the British Academy. Most important publications (all published by Suhrkamp and translated into many languages): Contexts of Justice (1994)\, Tolerance in Conflict (2003)\, The Right to Justification (2007)\, Critique of Justificatory Relations (2011)\, Normativity and Power (2015)\, The Noumenal Republic (2021). \nAdmission is free \nTo the recording: Here… \nOrganizer:\nResearch Center “Normative Orders” in cooperation with the Office for Economic Development of the City of Offenbach and the Klingspor Museum

SUMMARY:Nine tribes. The heritage of the indigenous peoples and the roots of modernity
DESCRIPTION:Book lɔ:ntʃ \nWith: Prof. em. Dr. Karl-Heinz Kohl (Emeritus Professor of Ethnology at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main\, member of the “Normative Orders” research center) \nC. H. Beck 2024 \nWhat do Montaigne’s cultural criticism and American democracy\, Freud’s totemism theory and Lévi-Strauss’ structuralism\, bridge painters and surrealists\, hippies and the sexual revolution have in common? Karl-Heinz Kohl uses the example of nine tribes to show how these and many other theories\, avant-garde currents\, emancipation and protest movements were shaped by a fascinated view of indigenous peoples. He explains how the indigenous peoples themselves made use of their fascination with the West and how closely intertwined the seemingly contradictory worlds are in the modern age. His vividly and captivatingly written book is a major achievement that will revitalize debates about “cultural appropriation”. Ever since the first great voyages of discovery on the threshold of the modern era\, reports of foreign lands and people have captivated Europeans. Their nudity has called European customs into question. Their social orders inspired protest movements. Their art inspired the European avant-gardes. And ethnographic descriptions – from Friedrich Engels’ materialist view of history to post-colonial “anthropophagism” – have led to a flood of theories\, some of which still shape our image of man today. Karl-Heinz Kohl explains why the West has found its alter ego above all in nine tribes. He explores the reports about them\, tells vividly how they have turned European culture on its head for over 200 years\, and uses many surprising examples to show how indigenous cultures have also changed in this process. \nPlease register at office@normativeorders.net. \nFurther information about the book: Here... \nOrganizer: Research Center “Normative Orders” of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main in cooperation with the Frobenius Institute for Cultural Anthropological Research at the Goethe University Frankfurt

SUMMARY:Trusting the Blockchain\, Trusting the Novel
DESCRIPTION:ConTrust Speaker Series \nLecture by Adam Kelly (Associate Professor of English at University College Dublin) \nIn the famous 2008 paper announcing the invention of Bitcoin\, Satoshi Nakamoto justified the new currency on the basis of a need for Internet commerce to eliminate the problem of trust. “What is needed is an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof instead of trust\,” Nakamoto wrote\, “allowing any two willing parties to transact directly with each other without the need for a trusted third party.” The key innovation behind Bitcoin was the blockchain\, a distributed ledger technology that ensured that the record of all transactions using the currency would be ineradicable and shared. Ever since the inauguration of this technology\, its implications for the problem of trust – in but also well beyond the arena of online commerce – have been heavily debated. Some titles of recent books indicate how close the connection between blockchain and trust has become: The Blockchain and the New Architecture of Trust (2018); Building Decentralized Trust: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the Design of Blockchains and Distributed Ledgers (2021); Searching for Trust: Blockchain Technology in an Age of Disinformation (2022). \nThis paper examines the implications of blockchain for\, and through\, a much older technology that retains an intimate link with the trust architecture of human life in modern societies: the literary novel. Responding to the virtual absence of literary studies from the otherwise rich interdisciplinary debates on trust over the past few decades\, the paper summarizes work in the discipline on the novel’s historical importance for embedding social trust in liberalism\, a modern political and economic regime that\, according to Niklas Luhmann\, “attempts to shift expectations from confidence to trust.” Connecting this shift in expectations to the debates around blockchain\, the final part of the paper will conduct a reading of Jennifer Egan’s The Candy House (2022). Egan’s novel offers a thought experiment about how the blockchain could impact human life\, and how the novel’s own architectures of trust might respond to that impact. \nAdam Kelly is Associate Professor of English at University College Dublin\, having previously taught at the University of York and Harvard University. SUMMARY:Tourism\, Landscape and Interiority in ARANYER DIN RATRI - Ranjani Mazumdar (Delhi)
DESCRIPTION:Four tourists from the city travel to the Bengal countryside and experience the ecology of the forests\, the tribal life of the indigenous people and their village festivals. The journey away from the city becomes an exploratory journey into the life of the soul\, in which the travelers’ self-image is at stake and which leads to a pendulum movement of discovery and destruction. \nRanjani Mazumdar is Professor of Film Studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi \nFilm:ARANYER DIN RATRI(Days and Nights in the Wilderness) India 1969\, 158 min.

SUMMARY:The Territorial Fragments of Globalization in Contemporary Bombay Cinema
DESCRIPTION:ConTrust Research seminar “India as Method: Challenges and Perspectives in the Study of Media and Politics in Contemporary South Asia” \nThis presentation will examine the use of locations in Bombay cinema since the turn of the 21st century. The complicated workings of various kinds of production infrastructures typically shape cinema’s topographical motivations and sense of scale. Through a comparative analysis of a set of films shot in and around Bombay with films shot in iconic locations outside India\, I will establish how the aesthetic drives of vertical\, horizontal\, and transnational urbanism have generated a cartographic diversity in the cinematic imagination of globalized India. \nRanjani Mazumdar teaches cinema studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She is the author of Bombay Cinema: An Archive of the City\, and her current research focuses on globalization and film culture\, intermedial encounters\, and the intersection of technology\, travel\, design\, and colour in 1960s Bombay Cinema.

SUMMARY:On the eve of the constitutional anniversary: 75 years of the Basic Law - a constitution of freedom and balance
DESCRIPTION:Public lecture \nThe Basic Law contains comprehensive guarantees of freedom. From the very beginning\, constitutional practice has developed a wide range of concrete content from the openly formulated fundamental rights. The result is a constitution of freedom that is unique in Germany to date. In it\, freedom is not without its obligations. The Basic Law forms the foundation of a comprehensive legal equalization system. It draws its persuasive power from this. However\, the constitution itself inevitably leads to the limits of equalization and seems to risk its success there: If it is not possible to reconcile conflicts of freedom under constitutional law in harmony\, but must be achieved through a priority decision\, it leaves losers behind. Their integration is a challenge for the liberal constitutional state. If the constitution completely rejects the extreme use of communicative freedom from the outset\, it leaves the mode of balancing completely behind. It does so in order to protect unavailable goods and itself\, but in doing so it seems to give up a part of its identity. However\, the limits of equalization do not mean the end of the constitution. Its persuasive power may become less self-evident at the limits of balance. However\, the visibility of the ambivalence of such border crossings also presents an opportunity. \nGreeting \nProf. Dr. Enrico Schleiff (President of Goethe University)\nProf. Dr. Rainer Forst (Director of the “Normative Orders” Research Centre at Goethe University)\nProf. Dr. Matthias Jahn (Chairman of the Board of the Frankfurt Law Society) \nPublic lecture by \nProf. Dr. Gabriele Britz (former judge of the Federal Constitutional Court\, Professor of Public Law at Goethe University) \nThe lecture is open to the public. SUMMARY:Conflict and Trust in the European Copyright System
DESCRIPTION:2024 European Copyright Society Conference \nThe European Copyright Society (la Société européenne du droit d’auteur) was founded in January 2012 with the aim of creating a platform for critical and independent scholarly thinking on European Copyright Law and policy. Its members are scholars and academics from various countries of Europe\, seeking to articulate and promote their views of the overall public interest on all topics in the field of authors rights\, neighboring rights and related matters. The Society is neither funded nor instructed by any particular stakeholders. The 2024 ECS conference will address current conflicts over the scope and enforcement of European copyright law\, and look for ways to resolve these conflicts in a trustworthy manner and with a balanced outcome. The first session will focus on the role of copyright in the data economy\, in particular the impact of copyright on data access rights. In the second session\, Thomas Koch\, the presiding judge of the copyright senate of the Bundesgerichtshof\, will give a keynote speech on the cooperation between the Bundesgerichtshof and the CJEU in the application and interpretation of EU copyright law. How does judicial cooperation work in practice\, and is it characterized by mutual trust? The third session is dedicated to copyright in the platform economy. Does the current legal regime ensure fair remuneration for authors? Can “trusted content creators” and “trusted metadata” improve the current situation? Finally\, the fourth session will look at European copyright from the perspective of sustainable development and human rights. \nConference fees: 150\,00 € (standard fee) 50\,00 € (academics) Registration via this link. \nFurther information is available on the conference website. \nProgram \n08:30\nRegistration \n09:00\nWelcome by Alexander Peukert\, Chair of ECS \n09:15-10:45\nSession 1: Copyright\, the Data Economy and Data Access 90 min\nOle-Andreas Rognstad: Data Ownership Ambiguity – A Trust Problem (20 min)\nMartin Kretschmer/Thomas Margoni (ECS guest)/Tatiana Eleni Synodinou: The Paradox of Lawful Access (20 min)\nMireille van Eechoud: Does the Data Economy Call for Unitary Copyright? SUMMARY:#55 German culture of remembrance after October 7. Between reason of state and universal law
DESCRIPTION:55th Römerberg Talks \nSaturday\, May 25\, 2024 \nThe uniqueness of the Shoah and Germany’s special responsibility are part of the identity of the old Federal Republic of Germany: the protection of Jewish life as the last resort of German domestic and foreign policy stems from the murder of millions of European Jews. At the latest since October 7\, the Hamas massacre in Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza\, it has become clear that this hard-won culture of remembrance – not least in the historians’ dispute of 1986 and 87 – is no longer suitable as an unquestionable moral resource. How universal is a moral standpoint that is derived from guilt? What moral obligation arises from the singular crime committed by the Germans for people whose belonging to this country is constantly called into question? So what would be a contemporary culture of remembrance and successful reappraisal in our pluralistic society? And how can the special responsibility that arises from historical perpetration be reconciled with a sensitivity for the suffering and misery of the present and future? \nModeration: Hadija Haruna-Oelker and Alf Mentzer \nThe event is open to the public. Admission is free. \n  \nProgram \n10:00\nWelcome\nDavid Dilmaghani\, Hessian Ministry of Science and Research\, Art and Culture \n10:15\nDan Diner\nThe Binding of Memory – On Germany\, Israel and the Crux of Historical Ethics \n11:15\nMeron Mendel\nIsrael’s security as a German reason of state: the history of a controversial postulate \n12:15\nEsther Schapira and Nazih Musharbash\nThe Middle East conflict on German soil \n13:15\nLunch break \n14:15\nAsal Dardan\, Alena Jabarine & Hannah Peaceman\nSpeak anyway. SUMMARY:Violence in office. Excessive use of force by the police and how to deal with it
DESCRIPTION:Public lecture \nThe event will present the results of the DFG research project KviAPol (Assault in Office by Police Officers) \, which ran from 2018 to 2023. Based on a quantitative survey of victims with over 3\,300 participants and over 60 qualitative interviews with experts from the police\, justice system and civil society\, the project investigated situations\, forms and consequences of police violence\, as well as how victims\, the police and the criminal justice system assess and deal with them. For the first time in Germany\, the project examines the different perspectives on excessive police violence and provides empirical evidence of the obstacles that arise when dealing with the criminal justice system. \nIn the lecture\, we will present the key findings of the study\, report on the experiences of those affected and outline the functional dominance of the police\, which becomes clear when dealing with excessive police violence. Afterwards there will be room for questions and discussion. \nThe event is also part of the third practical forum of the research initiative “ConTrust – Trust in Conflict” and is supported by the Friends and Sponsors of Goethe University. \nPresenting research team: \nLaila Abdul-Rahman | Criminologist and law graduate\nHannah Espín Grau | Political scientist and law graduate\nLuise Klaus | Human geographer\nTobias Singelnstein | Professor of Criminology and Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main\, “ConTrust” research initiative \nRegistration is not required. \nThe presentation will be broadcast live online and recorded: Here… \nOrganizer:\nDFG research project KviA-Pol together with the research initiative “ConTrust – Trust in Conflict” at the Research Center “Normative Orders” at Goethe University

SUMMARY:Publicity and the Political in the Long 20th Century

SUMMARY:Mapping the networks of gendered performance\, labor\, and mobility
DESCRIPTION:Priyadarshini Shanker (University of North Carolina\, Wilmington) \nThis talk intervenes in three prevailing frameworks of Indian film and media studies – auteurist approaches\, history of film movements\, and digital media studies – through three case studies that centralize the optics of feminist performances. Shanker proposes corporeal intervention that potentially recasts the historiography of Indian cinema as a network of gender\, performance\, labor\, and mobility. The aspiration is to move away from ideological readings of Indian cinema to push for a history and theorization of gendered performance.
